Share

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a €3.5 million loan to Komercijalna Banka AD Skopje to support energy-saving investments in North Macedonian homes. The initiative is backed by the European Union (EU) and Japan.

The funds will be used to offer green loans to homeowners, housing cooperatives, and businesses for energy-efficient upgrades. These investments will include insulation, high-performance windows, heat pumps, and solar panels.

By reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, the project aims to improve the quality of life for residents while contributing to North Macedonia’s green transition. Additionally, it will help alleviate financial burdens for households by lowering energy bills.

Odile Renaud-Basso, EBRD President, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “We are proud to support North Macedonia’s green energy transition by funding energy-efficiency upgrades in residential buildings… These investments will significantly enhance the lives of homeowners.”

Maja Stevkova Sterieva, Chief Financial Officer of Komercijalna Banka AD Skopje, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its positive impact on households and the environment.

The EBRD’s Green Economy Financing Facility (GEFF) will provide technical assistance to Komercijalna Banka AD Skopje to develop a tailored green lending model. Support will also be extended to construction companies and green technology providers to foster a wider green transformation in the residential sector.

The project is part of the EBRD’s Green Economy Transition approach and is supported by the Japan-EBRD Cooperation Fund and the EU’s Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF). To date, the EBRD’s GEFF program has benefited over 18,000 homeowners in the Western Balkans.

Komercijalna Banka AD Skopje, the largest commercial bank in North Macedonia, will play a crucial role in delivering these green loans to its customers.

The EBRD is a leading investor in North Macedonia, with a total investment of €2.9 billion in 190 projects to date.
