A Citizen-Centered Approach to Climate Action
Dr. Leila Akrimi emphasized that Tunisia, like many nations, faces pressing environmental challenges: severe water stress, recurrent droughts, forest degradation, wildfires, and the looming threat of rising sea levels. These issues, she noted, are not solely Tunisian problems but global crises requiring collective solutions.
The program, developed in partnership with the Canadian government, the International Center for Local Development, and the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, leverages Canadian expertise and technology to introduce nature-based solutions. Its mission is to foster dialogue and collaboration, enabling local governments to co-create concrete responses that directly benefit communities.
Strengthening Local Governance for Sustainable Impact
At the heart of the program lies local governance empowerment. Dr. Akrimi highlighted the importance of strengthening the capacity of municipal councils in Tunisia, ensuring they can design and implement effective public policies to address environmental challenges.
Beyond strategy, the program focuses on turning vision into funded projects. Participating municipalities will gain access to development initiatives financed through the program, enhancing their ability to respond sustainably. Success, however, will depend not only on financial support but also on investing in human capital and citizen engagement.
A Broad Network of Collaboration
Implementation involves a wide ecosystem: national and local institutions, Tunisian research centers, municipalities, and Canadian organizations working in climate governance. This multi-stakeholder approach ensures that solutions are rooted in science, guided by policy, and reinforced by local participation.
Dr. Akrimi stressed that climate resilience cannot be achieved without citizens at the center of action. By aligning global expertise with local needs, this initiative aims to build a future where Tunisian communities can withstand environmental risks while advancing ecological sustainability and social well-being.
