Japan, the top government contributor to the voluntary funding of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in 2025, has held talks in Tunisia with the Organization’s representation on the priorities of sustainable and inclusive industrial development.

A leading Japanese partnership

Japan maintains a partnership with UNIDO that covers, among other areas, the transfer of technology and skills, the strengthening of industrial capacities, and support for businesses and value chains.

It was in this context that H.E. Mr. SAITO Jun, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Tunisia, met Mr. Lassaad Ben Hassine, UNIDO Representative in Tunisia. He was accompanied by his colleagues, Ms. Giusy Musaro and Mr. Idriss Guerziz.

Energy transition and decarbonization in the future CPP Tunisia 2026-2030

The discussion presented UNIDO’s technical cooperation portfolio in Tunisia, along with the main directions of the future Country Partnership Programme (CPP) Tunisia 2026-2030. Five priorities emerge:

  • SME competitiveness;
  • innovation and digital transformation;
  • energy transition and decarbonization;
  • circular economy;
  • skills development.

These priorities are aligned with Tunisia’s 2026-2030 Development Plan. They also fall within the orientations of the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) 2027-2031.

Quality, innovation, skills and the green transition

Both sides also covered several areas of shared interest: quality and productivity, technological innovation, skills development and the green transition.

They also looked back at cooperation experiences already implemented in Tunisia, notably in the area of climate action.

The meeting thus provided an opportunity to exchange information and perspectives on industrial development priorities in Tunisia and on areas of common interest.
